Purpose

I wanted a small, self-contained project to work on over winter break that would give me some practice with basic circuits ( notably with limit switches to control motor direction). I also wanted to try to make this a Christmas gift for my parents, which made me think more intentionally about product design.( So things like ergonomics and usability, rather than just making something that works).

Initial Prototype

Partlist

For the Initial prototype all I really wanted to see was that if you press one button the drill bit spins clockwise and vise versa.

For the drill chuck I decided against CADing a complex chuck or trying to buy one (to save money). So I decided to simply get the dimensions of the drill, bit, my motor and adjust tolerances.

In my Initial prototype I tried to design my circuits online using DigiKey’s Online Application: Scheme It.

I originally had 2 leds parallel to the motor, but decided later to just make sure the motor works first.

After making sure the circuit worked, I designed the outer shell of the screwdriver and the other smaller pieces on OnShape.
